Certified B Corporations: Making Business A Force For Good

02/14/2022

Social responsibility is important to us. And as the destination for sustainable and responsible brands, it’s important that our retail brand partners share our values. That’s why we work with some seriously awesome companies that make social responsibility a priority.

Certified B Corporations
We’re proud to partner with several Certified B Corporations, which balance purpose and profit, considering their impact on workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. In order to become certified, these companies must meet high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors ranging from charitable giving to environmental impact and more.
Let’s meet the brands and take a closer look at how they’re making a difference.

tentree
tentree makes Earth-first essentials using the most sustainable (and comfortable) materials in the world. Every time you purchase an item, the brand plants 10 trees. This makes big change accessible to everybody and shows the lasting impact that one small choice can have. So far, tentree has planted more than 72 million trees – with plans to plant a billion by 2030! But the journey doesn’t end there. tentree is constantly looking at innovative ways to make apparel with the smallest possible footprint and create more circular supply chains. Its ethical factories create your product in fair, safe working conditions.

Klean Kanteen
Klean Kanteen makes high-quality drinkware to reduce the world’s dependence on single-use plastics. Every time you make a purchase, the brand invests one percent of the sale to environmental nonprofits through a partnership with 1% For The Planet. So far, it has donated over $3.4 million to organizations working to make the world a more sustainable place. Klean Kanteen has also been certified by Climate Neutral, which uses an independent and rigorous certification program to verify that a company has achieved carbon neutrality for its entire greenhouse gas footprint through a combination of emissions reductions and offsets. It reduces these emissions by increasing use of renewable energy, reducing packaging material use and increasing packaging recycled content.

Karst Stone Paper™
Made from 100% sustainably recycled stone, and without any bleaches or acids, Karst Stone Paper™ is rebuilt from first principles to be better than wood-pulp paper: more durable, more sustainable, and infinitely smoother to write on. Karst ensures that materials are responsibly sourced, employees are treated and paid fairly, and leaders work for a greater cause than a profit margin. On top of creating paper that wastes no trees or water, Karst is 100% carbon neutral and committed to making a difference through partners like One Tree Planted

Bellroy
It’s the Bellroy mission to improve the way people carry their everyday essentials by providing products that are used and loved for as long as possible. The brand’s day-to-day decisions are guided by its environmental goals, which include reducing waste and energy consumption through its entire process, seeking biodegradable or recyclable materials and products where they make sense, and actively pursuing a better understanding of its impact and how to reduce it. Bellroy also commits a portion of its sales revenue directly to the most effective human flourishing projects, guided by the Center for Effective Altruism, GiveWell, and the global Effective Altruism community.

Hilana
Hilana uses upcycled and recycled cotton to create beautiful blankets and other products that inspire a sustainable way of living. Founded in Santiago, Chile, this women-owned business is committed to finding new ways to protect the environment, driven by a commitment to sustainability, responsibility and craftsmanship.

Every year, about 100 billion pieces of clothing are produced. About 80 billion are purchased. More than half end up in landfills, taking decades to decompose. Hilana Upcycled Cotton closes the manufacturing loop in the cleanest way, using textiles made from recycled material through a zero-waste process – with no dyes or chemicals. This allows the brand to make high-quality blankets while minimizing its impact on the environment. In fact, during a three-year span, Hilana upcycled more than five tons of cotton waste and saved over 15 million gallons of water.

Day Owl
Respect people, reduce waste, reuse objects, recycle material. That’s the philosophy of Day Owl, a brand on a mission to become the first completely circular bag company. The brand makes sustainable bags from recycled landfill-bound materials, repairs and refurbishes them to keep them in circulation for multiple owners, and when the bags are used up, Day Owl uses them as input materials for new bags.

Those are the four cornerstones of the Day Owl philosophy. And on top of its sustainability initiatives, the brand works closely with nonprofits like WORK, which aims to accompany families in Haiti out of poverty through good, dignified jobs. Day Owl also operates in the company of its sister organization, The First Mile®, which formalizes waste collection networks in low-income communities and bridges the gap for global brands to purchase from these responsible supply chains.
