Build-A-Book

Build-A-Book allows you the flexibility of customizing a book from scratch, by choosing from a variety of sizes, cover materials and colors, decoration methods, filler styles, page count, bindings, wire colors, packaging, and a multitude of upgraded Boost Options.

  • Size: Journal sizes range from 3x7 to 8.5x11.
  • Cover: Choose from Cover Series 1 (Classic), Cover Series 2 (Prestige), Cover Series 3 (Deluxe), or Specialty Cover
  • Decoration Method: Options include Debossing, Foil Imprinting, multiple color foils, Die-cut Windows, Die-cut Tabs, Paper Embossing, Screen Printing, Full-Color Printing, or ColorDirect.
  • Filler Style: Choose from stock filler, custom filler or full-color filler.
  • Binding: Select WireBound (multiple color choices), PerfectBound or CaseBound.
  • Boost Options: Add on Full-Color Inserts, Tip-ins, Graphic Wrap, color Bookmarks and Closures, Pens and Pen Holders, Variable Data Printing, Pockets, Business Card Sleeves, or FlagMarkers.
  • Packaging: Choose from Two-Piece Gift Boxes with Tissue Paper, Cinch Bags, Glassine Envelopes, Shrink Wrapping, EcoBags, Full-Color Mailers, Corregated Mailers, or TucGift Boxes.

These items arrive finished, fully assembled and bound, usually with a hardcover. Customization is limited, such as imprinting the cover, adding tip-in pages, graphic wraps, and packaging.

A method of color printing Full-Color artwork directly onto the cover material of your choice (some limitations apply). Available on WireBound, PerfectBound and CaseBound books.

Cover materials are classified into separate groups due to material cost: Classic, Prestige, Deluxe, and Specialty. Classic is the most common paper and is available in a wide variety of colors. Matching front and back covers is standard. All other series are standard front cover only with a black or white back cover. Matching back cover is available with an upcharge.

The front and back of the sheet are different, but the pages are the same throughout the book and printed in black ink. The customer can customize the pages and select a PMS color or Full-Color for an upcharge.

Choosing to use custom filler in a project can take a notebook or journal to the next level. At 2000+ pieces, a logo can be added to the pages at no additional charge for a great way to expand on brand messaging.

Full-Color printing can be used on common or uncommon filler, but is an expensive option. Perforation, bleeds, PMS printing are available for an additional charge and there are quantitity restrictions. Contact our Sales Team for guidance.

Most books will have lined (ruled) filler pages and available with 100 sheets (200 pages). Graph, Blank or Dot Grid filler options are offered at no charge. Other filler styles such as Multi-functional, Non-dated, NoteTaking, Productivity, and Proficiency are available in limited sizes with an upcharge. Stock filler can only be added to the Made-to-Order books.

Uncommon filler is composed of different pages printed in black throughout the book. Uncommon filler can be used in Wellness journals, rotating the days of the week or numbering pages. Uncommon filler is an upcharge option.

Full-color covers are digitally printed on an HP Indigo Press with a coating added, and come in a variety of sizes.

  • ImageBooks: A full-color sheet with film coating mounted to heavy chipboard and wire bound.
  • ImageFlex: A flexible 16pt sheet with film coating wrapped over 100 filler sheets.
  • SlimLine: A full-color, 16pt flexible cover with film coating, 40pt black chipboard back cover, containing 70 sheets and wire bound.
  • ValueColor: A full-color, 80# gloss cover with film coating and 50 filler sheets.

Pricing includes stamping a customer’s artwork in a single position on the outside of the front or back journal covers. Positions are indicated with a letter from A–G and are shown below.

The primary method of imprinting on CaseBound books is debossing. The standard imprint area is 16 square inches, positioned anywhere on the outside covers. Oversized and edge-to-edge printing may not work on all products. For best results, contact our team for guidance.

Screenprinting is available for PMS Matching, guaranteed on white substrate as the color of the material will impact the PMS. Multi-Color available with adequate space between colors, no tight registration available.

ColorDirect is a digital process printing directly onto the surface of the material. Certain colors and blends are difficult due to the simulated colors. Our team is trained to set customer expectations, and we will suggest a spec sample or send a photograph if necessary.

One or more single-sided or double-sided sheets added to a WireBound or PerfectBound journal to enhance a customized message. Printed in one color or full-color with our state-of-the-art digital press.

JournalBooks offers many books that are created from scratch allowing us to customize or “Build-A-Book” and add options. WireBound and PerfectBound are all Made-to-Order.

Pen Holders and pens included with a notebook is a very popular upsell, and JournalBooks offers three options. We carry a variety of pens that can be pad printed or the customer can supply their own. Pens supplied from Bullet or Leed’s will be inserted at no additional charge.

  • PenPort: An elastic pen loop and vertical elastic privacy closure are built-in to a special contoured black back cover on wirebound products.
  • PenDock: An elastic pen loop is attached to a sturdy vinyl insert bound into the back of the book between the filler and back cover. Available for WireBound, PerfectBooks, Wraps and Binders.
  • PenTab: A textured material with adhesive back and elastic pen loop that can be placed anywhere on a journal

PerfectBound books are available in a variety of sizes and styles. Flexible, wraparound covers are standard with the PerfectBound books. The ValueLine items are priced with limited custom opportunities, while the regular styles can be completely customized in the same way as the “Build-A -Book” styles.

One or more single-sided or double-sided sheets added to the front of a pre-made CaseBound book. Tip-ins are printed in full-color with our state-of-the-art digital press and attached with adhesive. A single sheet or a fold-out can be included in CaseBound books.

WireBound books use wire to bind the pages and cover together. This style journal lays flat. Small wire (3:1) is used for 50 to 70 sheets, and large wire (2:1) for 100 sheets. If insert pages are added, a larger wire may be needed to accomodate. WireBound books are 50% of JournalBooks’ business, and 7"x10" is the most popular size.
